Fundraising for Cancer Research

Fundraising for Cancer Research

Surpassing organizers’ goal, a staggering $2,779 was raised to help fund cancer research at the 2nd annual Bald for Bucks event held in March (Friday, March 9, 2018) in the gym at the Silver Creek Central School District.

Thirteen participants willing to be shorn of their hair – 9 students and 4 staff members – helped the district raised nearly $900 more than what was donated for the inaugural event in 2017. The four adults who participated this year include district Superintendent Todd Crandall, who agreed to an extreme haircut after the fundraiser reached the $500 mark.

Contrary to popular misconception, volunteers need not go completely bald for this fundraiser. Typically, those with shorter hair opt to go bald, but some participants choose to donate 8 or more inches of their locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths who provide free wigs to patients who have lost their hair due to cancer.

Student fundraisers: Taylor Nehrbass* ($285), Maddy Mott ($274), Amaya Slaght ($250), Kris Herrmann* ($211), Nia Nephew ($129), Bridget Whipple ($110), Cindy Schwab ($105), Bailey Watroba ($100), Sabrina Seneca ($50)

Staff fundraisers: Jessica Kardashian ($630)(Event Chair), Phil McMullen ($380), and Greg Brennan ($245).

Some of the Bald for Bucks participants were able to see firsthand the research and technology at Roswell Park in Buffalo last year& all student participants were invited to a Sabres game for their efforts.

Special thanks to Debby Michalak, Kristy Watson, Madison Sutter and Jenna Coughlin for volunteering cut/shave services and going out of their way to be to help the district in its pursuit of curing cancer.

*Herrmann and Nehrbass are both second-year participants.
