Government Students Give Back

A group of high school students pose by a Christmas tree in front of a display case containing information about WNY Heroes Inc.

Students in teacher Kristen Foley and teacher Jason Mirek's Government class at Silver Creek High School participated in a service project recently to encourage character strengths such as leadership, kindness, and teamwork.  The class participated in the Adopt-A-Family program through WNY Heroes, a non-profit organization that reaches out to veterans and military families that need essential services and financial assistance.  Students had the privilege of speaking to two Iraq/Afghanistan veterans involved with WNY Heroes and hearing their personal stories. In early December, the students were matched with a local veteran family. Students sponsored a $1 hat day in order to raise money. Those participating paid a dollar for the privilege of wearing a hat during school hours. To advertise, the group created flyers and decorated the showcase in the lobby.  All donations were used to purchase items from the family’s "wish list" to ensure they have an enjoyable holiday season. This was a great opportunity for the students to get involved and show their appreciation for those that protect our country.
