Superintendent Issues Back-to-School Update

Superintendent Issues Back-to-School Update

August 26, 2019

Dear families:

I hope that all of you are enjoying the last few days of summer vacation! It has been an extremely busy and productive summer here on the campus preparing for student arrival on Thursday, September 5, 2019. Families should be receiving a postcard this week from the Transportation Department regarding bus assignments.

I want to share a few important updates which will affect your children and your visits to our school. Please see the bulleted points below.

  • Raptor Security System: We will be implementing a new security system in all of our school buildings for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. This new security system will be operational starting the first day of school. Each entrance, District Lobby (High School/Middle School) and Elementary, will be equipped with the Raptor V-Soft Security System. Visitors will no longer be permitted to enter through other doors including the band entrance during school hours. This system is a web-based software application used in school districts across New York State as well as right here in Western New York to conduct instant sex offender screenings for all visitors to our school. Raptor will allow our school to electronically check all visitors against a registered sexual offender database, produce a visitor badge, and monitor visitors once inside our school buildings. The overall goal of implementing Raptor is to provide an additional safety measure for our students and staff. A Procedural Guide including a list of Frequently Asked Questions for the use of Raptor will be placed on the school website. Please know that the safety of our students is always our first priority. We thank you for your patience as we implement a new procedure for visitors entering our school buildings.

  • Elementary Entrance: Please be advised elementary student pick up and drop off is at the normal location and the bus loop remains operational. The small parking lot by the elementary playground remains closed for the 2019-2020 school year for construction purposes. The playground remains open and operational to the community.

  • Nurse's Suite Renovation: As part of the ongoing Capital Project work which will continue to occur throughout the 2019-2020 school year, our nurse's suite is presently being renovated so that it will be state of the art, including additional exam rooms and bathrooms. The renovation is expected to be complete by December 2019. The temporary nurse's suite is now located in room 434, which is located in the 5th grade wing between the elementary and middle school. Please follow normal protocol and procedures for picking your child up from the nurse's office if needed. Generally, the nurse will bring your child to the principal's office or school lobby to be picked up unless their injury or illness requires them to be picked up at the nurse's office.

  • Bus Garage Addition Work: Work to build the three bus mechanic bays on the south end of the bus garage will begin the first week of September 2019. The bus garage will remain operational during this work. Students will not be permitted to walk down Webster Avenue across from the bus garage. Students will be guided through the entrance and exits of the fence surrounding the football field to walk within the fenced area thus avoiding Webster Avenue and the construction zone. For safety reasons, students are encouraged to use an alternate route to avoid Webster Avenue while the bus garage work occurs.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child's principal with any questions you may have. Please be looking for the back-to-school edition of the Silverliner, which contains many updates pertaining to the upcoming school year including an extensive Capital Project update. This school year promises to be exciting with great opportunities for your children to be involved. Again, enjoy the end of your summer.

Sincerely,

Todd A. Crandall
