Happy Thanksgiving from Silver Creek Central School District. 🍂
Parent Broadcast – School Closure, Monday, November 21, 2022
Good afternoon Silver Creek School families, today is Sunday, November 20, 2022.
Due to continued travel bans and snow accumulation in Erie County impacting our faculty and staff commute, Silver Creek Schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday, November 21, 2022. This closure includes all after school activities and the National Honor Society Ceremony. The NHS Ceremony has been rescheduled for December 5th at 5:30, including the dinner afterwards. We are planning to be open Tuesday if at all possible.
As always, thank you all for your support with these difficult decisions. Student and staff safety is paramount! Please be safe tomorrow.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19- All activities are canceled today with the exception of varsity basketball. Boys and girls basketball practices are permitted, however if any students cannot make it due to weather conditions they will not be penalized. Everyone be safe. All Sunday activities are canceled.
Due to staffing availability, starting November 29th, Adult Lap Swim will be on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:00am to 7:00am.
Good evening Silver Creek School families, today is Thursday, November 17, 2022.
Governor Hochul has declared a disaster emergency for 11 counties, including Chautauqua, effective November 17, due to the incoming storm. As you are likely aware, the storm is predicted to have heavy snowfall, blizzard-like wind, and treacherous driving conditions throughout our region. Based on the Governor’s declaration, including travel bans in Erie County and the Thruway closure starting this evening, and the fact that a significant number of our staff commute from Erie County, we have determined the best course of action is to close school for Friday, November 18.
After school activities will proceed as planned tonight. ALL activities planned for tomorrow are canceled. We will make a determination concerning Saturday activities on Saturday morning and if Saturday activities are canceled, I will send a Parent Broadcast by 7:45 a.m. indicating cancellation of activities. If you do not receive a Broadcast Saturday morning, that indicates activities will proceed as planned.
As always, thank you all for your support with these difficult decisions. Student and staff safety is paramount! Please be safe tomorrow and this weekend.
SAVE THE DATE- DECEMBER 8!! Wellness Matters! The Silver Creek Board of Education, administrators, and staff care about the physical, social emotional, and mental well-being of our students and their families. #SAMEHERE presenters will explain how social emotional, mental health connects to our physical well-being.
During the presentation, supervised childcare activities provided for PreK-Gr. 6, but all are invited to attend the presentation.

The high school character committee is back in full swing! For the month of October, students, faculty, and staff were nominated for displaying "perseverance." Perseverance is the ability to not give up on yourself or others when times get hard. Nominees were highlighted on the morning announcements. There were many nominations, and on Monday, November 14, there was an assembly. Here, anyone who was nominated was called up. They received a certificate which explained why they were nominated and a Tootsie pop. Our Knights of the Month were then announced. The Knights of the Month for perseverance are (in picture order): Mr. Albert VanDette, Spanish teacher; Jorge Hasbun, 11th grade; Bella Banach, 9th grade; Michael Dispenza, 10th grade; and Isabella Kmitch, 12th grade. Congratulations to all of the nominees and the Knights of the Month!
For November/December, people can be nominated for demonstrating "humor." Humor is the ability to look on the lighter side of life and trying to brighten others' days through laughter.
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students build and code their robots during Great Minds Club!
A group of 20 local students looking to get out into the community and help in some way gathered recently (Monday, November 7, 2022) at Glenwood Cemetery in Silver Creek.
Armed with rakes borrowed from their homes or loaned by the district and village, Earth Club and National Honor Society of Silver Creek High School were on a mission to spend a morning giving back.
“The students wanted to show they are willing to get into the community and lend a hand that’s not always there,” says Earth Club advisor and teacher Megan Kucharski, who along with NHS advisor Carolyn Laurenzi, oversaw the work. "We chose Glenwood Cemetery by chance, and we all are so glad we did.”
The students boarded a bus mid-morning and -- when they arrived at the Old Main Road location and saw the vast expanse of leaf-covered ground – they got right to work. For two-plus hours they toiled alongside groundskeeper Cliff Edwards on a wind-swept, sunny day to make the cemetery plots visible again for visitors.
It was hot, sweaty work and -- for efficiency’s sake -- they focused on one large section by raking leaves to a nearby roadway so Mr. Edwards could use his plow to clear them away.
“It’s a great community service project. I’m always happy when the kids are willing to lend a hand and it was a fantastic turnout,” says cemetery board president Ed Newman. “They got a lot of leaves raked and we were against a lot of wind. I know our groundskeeper appreciates it, too.”
After returning to campus, the students enjoyed some pizza lunch and reflected on their effort.
“Being able to speak with the president of the cemetery was what truly made us believe we did something nice for the community,” says Earth Club president Karissa Buchanan, a sophomore at SCHS. “(Mr. Newman) said that us coming down was a huge help and a great deed not only for the cemetery staff, but for those wanting to visit their families. In the end our group was able to look at all the progress and enjoy what we did for our town.”
The Earth Club and National Honor Society are thankful to the cemetery board for affording the students this opportunity to collaborate for the sake of the community.
Glenwood Cemetery operates with a small staff of one part-time employee. It is overseen by the Silver Creek Cemetery Association Inc. Its board members include Mr. Newman, Wayne Ashley, Tyler Bain, David Clark, Donald Dawley, David Edwards, Linda Fryberger, Donald Gage, and Richard Schulenberg.
The cemetery cleanup is the first of many service projects of Earth Club and NHS plan for the 2022-2023 academic year. The groups are always welcoming suggestions for where they should turn their attention. They are already hoping to return to Glenwood in the fall of 2023 to lend a hand.
