Yesterday, we celebrated #EveryChildMatters by wearing Orange. This national day of remembrance began as a day to bring attention to the damage the residential school system did to Indigenous children, families, and culture for generations. The color orange was inspired by the real-life events that occurred to Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor. That trauma still exists today for current students, families, colleagues, and the community. #BKP #SCCARES #everyday

This week's Mystery Monday guest reader was Mrs. Pagano’s mom, Diane Reynolds. Ms. Reynolds is a retired teacher from SCCS, having taught 2nd and 4th grades for over 25 years. She selected the Book The Bumpy Pumpkin to read aloud to Mrs. Pagano’s 3rd-grade students. She also brought each student a small “bumpy” gourd as a gift. Students enjoyed learning that no matter what we may look like, we are all very special and one-of-a-kind!

Mrs. Kucharski's Biology class participated in pH prediction stations. Students worked in groups to discover pH values of various substances. They made predictions of where each substance would fall on the pH scale (acid, base or neutral) and then determined the pH value. They all worked together and stayed engaged, discovering the science behind substances they may see in their daily lives.

This Monday, she invited former Silver Creek teacher, Mrs. Julia Harford, into the classroom to read a story and host a discussion on Forces. This is a topic covered in third-grade science. Mrs. Harford did a great job teaching Mrs. Pagano and Mrs. Schuster’s third graders many new and interesting facts!

Knights Against Cancer had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at the One Gold event at Roswell Park this past Friday, supporting pediatric cancer patients and their families. The students were able to help families make luminary bags, create various pieces of canvas artwork, make gold bracelets, hear from doctors at Roswell and Oshei about the work being done for patients and were able to have the incredible opportunity to walk to Oshei and wave to the pediatric patients on JS12 who are unable to leave. Those who have been lost were honored and remembered, and if even one story is shared from the night, it increases awareness across communities.
“This event was so incredibly impactful on our student volunteers who gave up their Friday night to give back, and I am so proud to be able to share these opportunities with them,” said Mrs. Kardashian, the KAC advisor. “This club was designed to allow our students to fight back when that fight can feel so hopeless at times, and this event left them feeling that energy. They were the epitome of BKP.”
