Women’s Studies students in Mrs. Jessica Kardashian’s class travelled to Seneca Falls — the birthplace of women’s rights — on Thursday, May 18, 2023. 🚌 🗽
The class visited the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House and the Wesleyan Church, where the first Women’s Rights Convention was held and the Declaration of Sentiments was signed. ✍️
The class heard from park rangers about the significance of women including Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony and their passion for the not only the right to vote, but how it was the ultimate goal for anything else in women’s rights.
“This trip was inspiring, a beautiful end to this school year,” says Kardashian. “It is something I hope will show the ladies I have been privileged to share this class with that they are capable of anything and everything with a little passion and drive.”
They then headed to the Women’s Hall of Fame and explored and told their own stories via unique activities. They used yarn from an activity utilized by people from all over the world to help create an artwork that will eventually hang in the gallery.

Over a week, students learned a Greek myth that was translated into a play, which was ultimately performed for parents and teachers. Students had to learn lines, create props and dress up to bring their myth to life in front of their audience. The students all did a fantastic job, and fun was had by everyone!

The Parents As Teachers program at Silver Creek Central School District, facilitated in collaboration with the Jamestown Community Learning Council, has been strengthening family relationships through skill-building for nearly three years.
During the 2022-2023 academic year, PAT serves families with children ages birth to 5 with monthly home visits, child development resources, and screenings that connect families to services and help children achieve milestones. PAT staff work with the SCCS Counseling Department, teachers and staff.
The various interactions between parents/guardians occur during visits in school, in homes and sometimes at community sites. By helping facilitate play between an adult and a child, it helps a child learn through hands-on experience. Repetition of activities children enjoy helps develop and refine their abilities. These activities help strengthen the parent-child relationship and support that child's development.
“I love this job and I love working with the families that I have had the privilege to work with,” says PAT home/school liaison Rose-Wickmark, who is the SCCS connection for families of students in first through fourth grades. “I love seeing kiddos and those that love them achieve their goals.”
JCLC home visitors provide individualized, interactive activities for parents and children to enjoy at home, including story time, arts and crafts, and more. The program also creates social, group opportunities that connect parents and children with other young families.
PAT provides learning packets (more than 300 since 2020) that are fun and encourage parents/guardians to be a part of their child's learning. And they’ve provided more than 300 new books to families since 2020.
Here are some more statistics about Parents as Teachers for the 2022-2023 academic year:
• 19 families with 42 children were served.
• There were 139 visits either at home or school.
• 23 developmental screenings were completed
Since September 2020, the program has helped 29 families with 58 children. PAT completed 304 visits in the home or at school plus an 90 additional visits.
