The Silver Creek Cheerleaders held the second annual Cheer Clinic for students in Pre-K to 8th grade on Saturday, December 10, 2022. 📣 Thirty nine students from Silver Creek and Forestville attended. The morning started with students rotating through four different stations (dance, cheer, stunting, and tumbling). All participants enjoyed pizza from Hanford Country Market and lemonade for lunch. 🍕🥤 After a practice run, the students performed a dance and cheer for their parents followed by student demonstrations on tumbling and stunt groups! 🤸‍♀️ 💪 The event was a huge success, everyone had a fantastic time and all are looking forward to the event next year. 💛🖤💛🖤 #wearesilvercreek #blackknightpride #BKP

Several students and staff Silver Creek High participated in the Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg on Friday, December 2, 2022. 💦 🥶 The Polar Plunge is held over two days, with the Friday event for schools only. The Cool School’s Challenge raised more than $140,000, from local schools and the total event raised more than $424,000, a record amount for both days! 💰 Over the past few months, the SCHS team worked hard to raise money to help sponsor Special Olympic athletes. The students each had to raise a minimum of $125 to participate. Many went above and beyond this amount, helping the Silver Creek team raise $10,000. 💪 Eva Tytka and Julie Decker also led the event with the national anthem. This is the third year SCHS participated in the event, each year raising more money than the previous year. 💛🖤 This year Emily Bowers, Julie Decker, Mrs. Shumaker, and Mrs. Decker jumped for the third year; Katie Gard, Lily Prince Rivera, Briana Spinuzza, Stephanie Van Cheri, and Mrs. Cook jumped for their second year; and participating in the jump for the first time were Annie Matney, Haley Ross, Kaydence Spiegle, Ella Austin, Marissa Grisanti, Tyler Januchowski, Dominic Kemp, Summer Sanden, Colin Shumaker, Eva Tytka, Sabra Warner, and Emily Yerke. Everyone had a great time!

𝗔 𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: All students at Silver Creek Central School District were invited to sample meaningful Indigenous foods during lunch recently in observance of Native American Heritage Month in November. Seniors Tory Cook and Kayla Johns along with juniors Lucille Jimerson and Timothy Williams worked to prepare four large vats of bright-red strawberry juice – more than enough for every Black Knight in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Strawberry juice is traditionally prepared with fresh, wild strawberries and served at ceremonies and other notable occasions. Under the direction of Ms. Mary Williams, Title VI Coordinator at SCCS, the high-schoolers collaborated to mash the strawberries, adding a modest amount of water and a touch of sugar to get the beverage to just the right consistency. “I knew I could depend on those students to carry out the task of making and serving the juice,” says Williams. “They only needed a little guidance on where to find things in the kitchen. I am very thankful that they handled the juice 100% from making it to serving it.” The Food Services & Nutrition Department prepared Indian tacos – composed of fry bread, meat, cheese and other toppings including lettuce – for students in sixth through 12 grades as a lunch option. “Every year we partner with our wonderful Food Services staff, and they take care of ordering everything we need,” says Williams. This cultural experience was possible via the collaboration of the following: Mary Williams, Title VI Coordinator; Aimee Sleeth, high school JOM teacher; Betsy Laurie, middle school teacher; Wendy Bray, cultural teacher; Tammy Blair, elementary JOM teacher; Jessica Huff, teacher; Williams Reynolds, Academic and Cultural Coordinator at SCES along with parent Tory Cook and Trudy Jackson, the director of the Seneca Nation of Indians Education Department. Thank you to Trudy Jackson for making the dough this year. Thank you to Jessica Huff for allowing us use of her electric skillets. "This day could not have happened without the support of the kitchen staff and all our collaborators,” says Williams. “It really takes the community coming together to make events like this long-lasting year after year.” SCCS celebrated NAHM on campus throughout November via a variety of cultural experiences including music, dance, art and literature.

On Wednesday, November 30th, Silver Creek’s Indigenous Honor Society had their first Induction Ceremony at Chef’s Restaurant in Buffalo, NY. The Indigenous Honor Society was created to find a cohort of Indigenous students that have compassion for others and have the academic discipline to succeed. I want this cohort of students to continue to support one another and find ways to support those around them while being active in their communities. Congratulation to our inductees: Tory Cook, Kayla Johns, Maya Monroy, Jackson and Timothy Williams. Your hard work and kindness has not gone unnoticed!

Members of the Knights Against Cancer club of Silver Creek Central School District volunteered at the Carly’s Club Trunk-or-Treat event held Saturday, October 29, 2022. Our Black Knights dressed up and handed out candy to the Carly’s Club members and their families. The blowup dinosaur inflatable costume worn by Adeline Richardson was one of the biggest hits of the event. This was the club's first time participating in this event and will certainly not be their last: "The smiles brought to our faces, the warmth and the pride I had in our kids was absolutely beautiful and getting to be a part of something so much bigger than us really grounded so many of our students," says advisor and teacher Mrs. Jessica Kardashian. "We couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of it!" Learn more about Carly's Club here: https://courageofcarlyfund.org/carlys-story/

History & Culture Club members of Silver Creek High attended the University at Buffalo Distinguished Speakers series with Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch in mid-November 2022. Yovanovitch comes from a family that fled Nazi persecution in various countries and is the child of parents who brought her to America and taught her the value of service. She worked on behalf of the United States as an ambassador to various countries, most notably in Ukraine twice. She retired after her last few years of service in 2019. She talked of the resolve of the Ukrainian people, their will and how important the unwavering support of the United States has been since February’s invasion. Silver Creek students were moved hearing Yovanovitch, who has worked for others in various capacities and is a strong-willed role model for young women. "We were able to meet her and it was a memory for all of us who attended we won’t soon forget," says teacher and advisor Mrs. Jessica Kardashian. "I feel as though it inspired a few of our students in ways they may never have thought feasible for themselves and I am beyond excited to see where it takes them!"
