WALKING A MILE IN THEIR SHOES
The conclusion to the Ugandan Water Project, undertaken by students at Silver Creek High this fall, happened Thursday, November 10, 2022, in the form of a water walk around the track. 💧🚶♀️🚶🚶♂️💧
In many parts of Africa young women and children are expected to walk hours and miles each day on the trek for water, which is unclean for those who drink it. Many children end up missing school either for this walk or due to Illness from the water and they end up missing school. Many are unable to pass the national exam due to missing of school and are unable to move on in their education. The students were able to carry a milk jug full of water around the track if they chose to, effectively giving them an idea of what the weight of water those in Uganda carry each day.
All freshman and sophomores took four laps around the track while carrying water jugs. The students listened to a short synopsis of the fundraising they did that included raising almost $750 to send to Uganda and 9 water filters to help sustain 2 or 3 schools.
"The filters we are sending over make their drinking water safer than what get here from our tap and allow for these children to go to school and achieve the education they deserve without having to worry about the long walk to water," says club advisor and teacher Mrs. Jessica Kardashian.
Students were encouraged to fundraise over a 2.5-week period and the highest fundraisers were Michael Dispenza and Marissa Grisanti, both raising over $250. They each won a T-shirt, a handmade Ugandan bracelet and a piece of art representing Uganda and the existing states within that was handmade in Uganda. Sam Bowers also won a handmade bracelet for raising over $50.
Mr. Jackson helped Mrs. Kardashian by deejaying the event with a few curated songs for the kids to keep up the energy.

Psychology students from Silver Creek High went on a field trip to the Buffalo Zoo on Thursday, November 3, 2022, to explore and analyze various animal behaviors. 🚌
The 20 students were able to attend an animal behavior and psychology class with zoologist and animal behavior specialist Jackie. They met three different animals that are ambassadors for the education program, including Indy, a sheltapucic or legless lizard, Bijou, a sunconier, and Pearl the porcupine, who brought a lot of laughter. 🦎🦔
Students were able to identify a variety of animal behaviors and assess various parts of animal bodies and why they may have specific features including turtle shells, beaver tails, peacock feathers, the sheddings of an anaconda and a male polar bear skull. 🦫🐢🐻🐍 They participated in both focal and scan sampling and using ethograms to analyze behavior.
The students then had a few hours to walk through the zoo and discuss and analyze the animals’ behaviors.
“As a class we discussed their understanding of the animal behaviors and how they changed after our class and the various aspects we might look for now that we had learned what to look for,” says teacher Mrs. Jessica Kardashian. “It was an awesome day for all of us.”

Cancer Awareness Week was observed by the Knights Against Cancer club at Silver Creek Central School District in late October 2022.
It was an effort to celebrate, honor, support and remember those who are fighting, have lost their fight, those who have survived and are in remission and caregivers who have been a source of support and hope for so many following diagnosis. 💓
Our Black Knights researched and found facts about cancer diagnosis, treatment and found ways to bring awareness to school. Each day for the week a piece of trivia was sent to all students and faculty to encourage them to research and find a better understanding of how cancer affects so many and to understand some of the world-class treatment available in Buffalo. 👩⚕️ 🏥
Throughout the year, the club works to bring awareness and to volunteer to make a difference and create change. The first five people to respond with the correct answers got to choose a prize from Mrs. Jessica Kardashian. 🎁
Throughout the week, students and faculty were also invited to fill out a pink brick with the names of anyone they know affected by cancer.
At the end of the week, the word HOPE was spelled out on the wall. 💞
Students also decorated the hallways for a Wear Pink Day. Faculty also donated to a casual day and collected funds for PUNT pediatric collaborative totaling almost $200 to be donated along with some “Movember” initiative funds. 💕
Students with Knights Against Cancer volunteered at Making Strides for Breast Cancer the weekend leading into Cancer Awareness Week and with the Carly’s Club trunk-or-treat next weekend.

The Knights Against Cancer club of Silver Creek Central School District collected donations of any and all hygiene products the week ahead of Thanksgiving 2022 for the local Silver Creek food pantry.
Hygiene products are some of the highest demand but lowest supply items for those in need. Our students and our faculty wanted to help in every way they can.
Products collected included large supplies of toilet paper, tissues, body washes, deodorants, more than 50 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste, diapers, wipes and baby wash, sanitary pads, detergent, soap and other personal items.
Inspired by the need to help others, Knights Against Cancer member Sarah Cross and fellow student Kendall Brunn also collected donations from students to wear pajamas Tuesday, November 22, 2022, just prior to Thanksgiving break. Those donations were also presented to the pantry along with the hygiene products.

Parent Broadcast – School Closure, Monday, November 21, 2022
Good afternoon Silver Creek School families, today is Sunday, November 20, 2022.

This closure includes all after school activities and the National Honor Society Ceremony. The NHS Ceremony has been rescheduled for December 5th at 5:30, including the dinner afterwards. We are planning to be open Tuesday if at all possible.
As always, thank you all for your support with these difficult decisions. Student and staff safety is paramount! Please be safe tomorrow.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19- All activities are canceled today with the exception of varsity basketball. Boys and girls basketball practices are permitted, however if any students cannot make it due to weather conditions they will not be penalized. Everyone be safe. All Sunday activities are canceled.

Due to staffing availability, starting November 29th, Adult Lap Swim will be on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:00am to 7:00am.

Good evening Silver Creek School families, today is Thursday, November 17, 2022.
Governor Hochul has declared a disaster emergency for 11 counties, including Chautauqua, effective November 17, due to the incoming storm. As you are likely aware, the storm is predicted to have heavy snowfall, blizzard-like wind, and treacherous driving conditions throughout our region. Based on the Governor’s declaration, including travel bans in Erie County and the Thruway closure starting this evening, and the fact that a significant number of our staff commute from Erie County, we have determined the best course of action is to close school for Friday, November 18.
After school activities will proceed as planned tonight. ALL activities planned for tomorrow are canceled. We will make a determination concerning Saturday activities on Saturday morning and if Saturday activities are canceled, I will send a Parent Broadcast by 7:45 a.m. indicating cancellation of activities. If you do not receive a Broadcast Saturday morning, that indicates activities will proceed as planned.
As always, thank you all for your support with these difficult decisions. Student and staff safety is paramount! Please be safe tomorrow and this weekend.
