LOFTY IDEAS: LEARNING TAKES FLIGHT Seventh-graders in Mr. Brad Bish’s classroom are pictured participating in a multipurpose learning activity in Crowe Commons at Silver Creek Middle School. • First, they are using paper airplanes to enhance their understanding of length and its measurement in a manner that’s supposed to be fun. • Second, they are using paper airplanes to help improve students’ scientific process and investigation skills. ‘ • Third, they are using paper airplanes to enhance our understanding of controlled experiments and the three types of variables that need to be considered when building these types of investigations. • Last, they are using paper airplanes to promote interest in careers related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. #wearesilvercreek #STEM #BlackKnightPride #BKP

Parent Broadcast 1/12/2022 Please be advised that so far this week we have had 13 elementary students, 5 elementary staff, 6 middle school students, 1 middle school staff, 8 high school students, and 1 high school staff test positive for COVID. The Chautauqua County Department of Health has been notified. We are working with the health department and are taking all recommended steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Rest assured; these individuals will not return until they have completed quarantine/isolation procedures for COVID-19 as directed by the local Department of Health. We once again remind everyone do their part both inside and outside of school to stop the spread of the virus. I encourage everyone to monitor symptoms, stay home if you’re showing any symptoms, and stringently follow social distancing, face mask, and hand washing protocols in and out of school. Rest assured, the District continues to enforce strict mask wearing policies and social distancing as directed by Chautauqua County and New York State. Home COVID test kits are still available for any student who has not already gotten one. Please contact your child’s building office to request one. Mrs. Rachel Castiglia’s Business students at Silver Creek High School competed in a competition at Jamestown Business College on Friday, December 10, 2021, and they emerged victorious! They competed against other local high schools in the 2021 "JBC College Games,” area high schools were able to bring their business students to compete in a series of business challenges! They created a business plan complete with: SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threat) analysis, resumé, mission statement, slogan, logo, commercial, social media marketing, and a budget. Silver Creek had the task of developing and promoting a transportation business. They named their business D6 Transportation. The following students used their knowledge and skills to complete the tasks: Tabitha Shevlin – Business Ownership – Project Leader Katrina Haskins – Business Law Riley Herling – Business Ownership and Career and Financial Management Chris Kwaizer – Business Law Daisy League – Web Design Dylan Miller – Career and Financial Management and Advanced Accounting Morgan Murphy – Business Law Robert Roth – Business Law Denver Scheffer – Video Game Programming Congratulations to these students for their hard work and creativity!

Our clothing closet fills a need when emergencies come up. A reminder that we will be handing out one free Covid test kit for each student today from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at the Elementary Band entrance (located in the Elementary bus loop) and tomorrow, Tuesday, January 4 from 1:00pm – 6:00pm. If your child tests positive after using the COVID kit, please have your child stay at home and contact your school nurse. It is important for you to know that the use of the kits is not mandatory and completely at your discretion. Additionally, if you do not have transportation and desire a test kit, you can call your child’s office and/or send in a note in with your child and arrangements will be made to deliver to your home. Please know, we appreciate your continued trust, partnership and flexibility as we continue to navigate Covid together. We continue our school year knowing that, “We are all in this together, and together we will get through this”.

This past week Governor Hochul and Health Commissioner Bassett announced a statewide goal of having as many students as possible tested for COVID upon their return to school. The Governor has called for school districts to be responsible for distributing COVID test kits to families by sending them home with students. To accomplish this goal, New York State sent COVID test kits to all school districts – we are scheduled to receive ours tomorrow, Sunday, January 2, 2022. We will receive enough test kits for every student in the Silver Creek District. These test kits are intended for families to use to test their child(ren) after winter break regardless of if your child has symptoms or not. If your child tests positive after using the COVID kit, please have your child stay at home and contact your school nurse. It is important for you to know that the use of the kits is not mandatory and completely at your discretion. Therefore, to maintain testing resources and to only supply testing kits to families who knowingly and willingly want a kit we will have a distribution set up for Monday, January 3 from 3:00pm – 6:00pm and Tuesday, January 4th from 1:00pm – 6:00pm at the Band entrance located in the Elementary bus loop. Additionally, if you do not have transportation and desire a test kit, you can call your child’s office and/or send in a note in with your child and arrangements will be made to deliver to your home. SHARING BLACK KNIGHT HISTORY FROM FAR We can't say goodbye to 2021 without first saying thank you to a couple far-flung Black Knights for helping us get the 2021-2022 academic year off to a great start by making a generous donation to our campus. 🙏 Here's the story of how it happened: Back in September 2021, we got a letter from Maryland resident Ms. Amanda Hawkins, who donated this beautiful Black Knights gym bag from the 1970's on behalf of her brother Andy Spear, who lives in California. 📬 It read, in part: "Our family lived in Silver Creek from 1965-1978... This bag was my brother Andy's... He joined the Navy after high school and ended up in San Diego... He is a retired police detective with the San Diego Police Department... Silver Creek has remained near and dear to our hearts all these years..." 🏫💛🖤 Thank you to Ms. Hawkins and Mr. Spear for their generosity and for sending a piece of our shared history home to Silver Creek, where it will be displayed for us all to enjoy. 🙌🤝
