The cast of Silver Creek High School's production of Disney's “The Little Mermaid” is thankful to everyone who came out to support them at the Land & Sea Dinner hosted at Sunset Bay Restaurant on Monday, March 20, 2023. 🙏 🧜‍♀️🍴 The students learned how the restaurant runs as they served, prepared, and cleaned up from the meal fundraiser. About 70 tickets were sold between both seatings and take-out orders. 👨‍🍳 🧼 💵 Guests enjoyed a small snippet of music from the show. At the 5 p.m. seating, students sang "Under the Sea" while at the 7 p.m. seating, they sang "Kiss the Girl." Both songs — and many more — can be heard at performances slated April 13-15 at 7 p.m. and April 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. 🌊😚🎶🎤 🎟️ Buy tickets online: https://tix.seatyourself.biz/webstore/accounts/silvercreekhs/buy-tickets. The cast is especially thankful to Mr. Michael Gristanti, the employees of Sunset Bay Restaurant, and the Performing Arts Boosters for supporting them, believing in them, and for making this delicious event take place! ☺️ 🙌 🫶

Following December’s well-attended Holiday Family Wellness Night, a four-part series of inclusive, virtual workshops will be held over the next few weeks. These events are hosted by David Hymowitz of #SameHere and are part of the district’s mission to educate and support the whole child. Community members are welcome to join one or all four virtual sessions. Links for the virtual workshops are accessible at www.silvercreekschools.org. Each workshop begins at 7:00 p.m. and runs approximately 45 minutes. Our first workshop will take place tomorrow evening, March 15, 2023. The topic will be Current Drug Trends. Silver Creek teachers Miss Foley and Mrs. Kardashian took the Human Rights and Genocide class on a field trip the weekend of March 11-12, 2023, to Washington D.C. 🚌 This annual field trip is made possible through the Holocaust and Social Justice Education program and the Hebrew Congregation of Chautauqua. It would not have been possible without the leadership of Mrs. Leigh-Anne Hendrick, Mrs. Emily Dorman, and Mr. Larry Cohen. 🙏 The group visited several landmarks as well as the African American Museum and U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students had the opportunity to explore the exhibits that examine the history of the Holocaust and other critical events of history and reflect on the moral questions raised by those events. The students learned a lot about social justice, advocacy, and how the choices they make are so important. 𝗘𝗡𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡: 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 For the fourth year in a row, Silver Creek Central School District joined together for the Special Olympics’ global Choose to Include Day, celebrated annually on the first Wednesday of March, with another enthusiastic demonstration of awareness and acceptance. Choose to Include Day is part of the Special Olympics’ Spread the Word Campaign, which is built on the idea that inclusion is a skill we all can learn and practice, together. “Choose to Include is a way for our students and staff to look through different eyes and celebrate everything we are when we come together to form the Black Knight family,” says Director of Special Education Megan Cook. “We each have strengths, but the beauty is that our strengths are different. We come from different backgrounds, have different experiences, have our own unique struggles, and get to celebrate different accomplishments. Not one of us is exactly the same as another, and not one of us is better than another.” Students and staff collaborated on displays, a themed spirit week, and a promise to build acceptance, understanding and community for those with intellectual disabilities excluded and isolated from peers in schools, workplaces and communities. By taking the pledge, participants demonstrate they value and respect all individuals and feel everyone should be included and accepted for who they are. "I'm grateful for this event and the impact it has had on our school. Every year we see improvements and strides toward our school being more inclusive and unified and one can't help but see that this week is in part to thank for it. Walking the halls for those five days you see people of all ages, races, and genders dress in colors to show awareness and acceptance,” says high school student Julie Decker. “Conversations are started and discussions of the next move forward are open. The school comes together in a beautiful harmony. I hope to see us continue to take steps forward and one day reach our full potential of inclusion." More than 750 Black Knights signed pledge cards, which were displayed in the high school lobby. The entire campus also dressed to impress during Unified Spirit Week, intended to spread awareness about autism, mental health, bullying, and LGBTQIA+ issues. Daily themes included: blue for autism awareness, green for mental health awareness, orange for anti-bullying awareness, and rainbow for Pride Day. The yearly Choose to Include observance at SCCS kicked off with the addition of the district’s Unified Sports bowing program in 2020. Since then, the district has added its Youth Activation Committee (YAC) and Unified Sports basketball team. The 2023 spirit week, pledge cards, and additional lobby displays were organized by YAC students and advisor Mrs. Janet Decker. "Choose to Include isn’t just an event, it is how we should live. Being able to bring this event to the students and staff has really helped make our school community more accepting to all,” says Mrs. Decker. “The number of cards on the wall and the growth of our Unified programs is a testament to our district’s willingness to expand our inclusive atmosphere and be more accepting of all individuals." High school teacher Carolyn Laurenzi-Timmerman, who also helps advise the district’s Gay Straight Alliance believes Unified Spirit Week is essential to the district’s foundation. “In a world where people are bullied in person and online every day, we need to learn to celebrate differences. Whether or not one of the themes ‘applies’ to an individual, it certainly applies to someone they know and love,” says Laurenzi-Timmerman. “Learning about what makes someone who they are is part of the beautiful reciprocal relationship that is life.”

An engaged community is a healthy community, and Silver Creek School District’s Family Outreach-School Connectedness team is building relationships through meaningful conversations via its #SameHere wellness initiative. Following December 2022’s well-attended Holiday Family Wellness Night, a four-part series of inclusive, virtual workshops kicks off Wednesday, March 15, 2023, with the topic of “Current Drug Trends” and wraps up in late April with a talk titled “Building Resiliency in Children.” The workshops are hosted by David Hymowitz of #SameHere and are part of the district’s mission to educate and support each and every student. “Relationships and emphasizing positive behavior are key in helping sharpen our focus on mental wellness for all students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade,” says district Superintendent Todd A. Crandall. “The pandemic heightened some of our social-emotional and mental well-being challenges and, thanks in part to American Rescue Plan grant funding, we are at a point where we can focus on prevention and development with #SameHere.” Managing every day stressors along with unexpected ones is at the heart of #SameHere, which also provides resources encouraging meaningful dialogue about social-emotional learning and mental wellness with families. Community members are welcome to join one or all four virtual sessions via this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83130573354. Links for the virtual workshops are also accessible at www.silvercreekschools.org. Each workshop begins at 7:00 p.m. runs approximately 45 minutes: • March 15, 2023: Current Drug Trends. Substance use is a large component of our culture. Society plays a major role in influencing kids’ opinions and attitudes toward using substances. It is important for parents and caretakers to know what those factors are, as well as what substances are trending in their world. • March 29, 2023: Why Do Students Self-Medicate? People utilize a host of mechanisms to cope with stress and difficult life situations. One coping tool is substances and it is believed the choice of substance may be linked to one’s primary emotional state. This workshop explores how this may be connecting and lead to self-medicating. It will also discuss ways to prevent and support students that may be heading toward or actually self-medicating. • April 12, 2023: How to Have a Discussion with Your Children About Substance Use. Traditional workshops educate adults on how to talk TO kids. Talking to kids is the same as talking AT them, which means they probably are not listening. This workshop demonstrates effective ways to engage your kids in a discussion about substance use by using active listening skills. Listening allows them to examine their feelings and beliefs about the potential role of substances in their lives and how to support them. • April 26, 2023: Building Resiliency in Your Children. Helping your children become resilient is one of the most effective protective factors they need to negotiate life on life’s terms. There are four main ingredients to building resiliency: hope, connections, purpose, and adapting. We will explore how to create and foster these areas in their lives so they can successfully face life’s challenges. Contact the district social workers with any questions at (716) 934-2603: Beth Miller (high school) ext. 2991; Kelsey Wise (middle school) ext. 4973; Allyson Gardner (elementary school) ext. 4965.
